Most pillowcases close with a zipper. On an adult bed, nobody notices. On a child's pillow, that zipper spends nine hours a night pressed against a cheek — a strip of hard plastic or metal right where the face rests. Pull tabs work loose. Teeth catch fine hair. Small parts come off small things.

This matters more than it sounds. A generic pillowcase is cut for a flat rectangular adult pillow. Put one on a contoured pillow and the fabric bridges straight across the centre channel — the recessed part that cradles the head. The case flattens the exact feature the pillow was built around, and your child sleeps on a pillow that no longer does its job.
